Financial investors in Daewoo Engineering & Construction (E&C) are vying to take over the management of Kumho Industrial and other key units of the troubled Kumho Asiana Group with an investment of 2.5 trillion won in fresh capital, according to a report by the Korea Times.

But both Kumho Group and creditor banks dismissed the move, citing uncertainty over whether the investors could raise the funds, and their reluctance to give up the group management.

At a meeting with officials from the state-run Korea Development Bank (KDB) and other creditor banks Thursday, investors proposed that they would secure 2.2 trillion won from foreign banks, pension funds and other sources to acquire a 50.1% stake in Kumho Industrial, the largest stakeholder of Daewoo E&C.

They then said they would dispose of stakes in Kumho Industrial and retrieve the investment after the company is normalized. The investors also suggested they would invest 300 billion won to take over a controlling stake in Asiana Airlines when Korea's second-largest air carrier issues new stocks to increase its capital.

Under this scenario, not only Kumho Industrial and Asiana Airlines, but also Daewoo E&C and Korea Express will be controlled by the investors. Currently, the airline company owns the largest stake in the logistics unit, Kumho Group's cash cow.
